A QR code will not scan or shows an error. What now?
Short answer
Most failures are light, focus or an old screenshot. Ask the guest to raise the brightness and hold still; if the code is a screenshot from another event it shows Not found. When the camera does not open, the browser has no camera permission. In any case you can search the guest by name and check them in manually, so the queue keeps moving.
The camera does not start
- Allow camera access when the browser asks. If you tapped Block, open the browser's site settings for scanner.guestlistonline.com and allow the camera.
- Use Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android; some in-app browsers (Instagram, Facebook) block the camera. Open the link in the real browser.
- Reload the page. Another tab or app may still be holding the camera.
The code is not recognised
- Screen too dark or cracked: ask for full brightness, or type the name.
- Code too small or too close: hold the phone 15 to 25 cm away and let it focus.
- Printed code with glare: tilt the paper.
Error messages
- Guest not found: the code belongs to another event or an old screenshot, or the guest was deleted. Search by name; if they are on the list, check them in manually.
- Already checked in: with the time and the staff member. Decide at the door; a companion may have used the main guest's code. Strict scanning prevents this.
- Not valid or payment pending: a paid event ticket that was not paid. The guest can pay on their RSVP page.
- Access denied: the door staff link was removed or belongs to another event. Ask the organizer for a new one.
Nothing works
Check in by name. Everything is logged the same way, and the organizer sees Manual as the method. If the scanner itself is down for everyone, message us in the chat; we see the same dashboard you do.
Questions about this
- The guest has no QR code at all.
- They confirmed without the ticket email arriving, or the automatic ticket is off. Search by name and check them in; the organizer can resend the ticket from the guest row.
- A guest shows a code and it says checked in already.
- Someone used that code before, possibly a companion. Look at the time and the party size shown, and decide. Strict scanning stops companion codes being reused.
- Does the scanner work on iPad or a laptop?
- Yes, any device with a camera and a browser. A laptop webcam is slower to focus than a phone.
